The origin of the
House of God Church
can be traced to the dream of one
Mother Mary Magdelena L Tate, a unique woman in American Church History. She suffered many hardships to become the founder and first chief overseer of the Church in 1903.
Mother Tate
died in 1930 and was succeeded by
Bishop M.F.L. Keith
who served from 1931-1962.
The history of the church in New Bern began in 1951. Elder A. Simmons, Elder Rogers, and their wives
came preaching in a tent and witnessing in the streets and many Souls were saved. The late Bishop J.R. Lockley
motivated this small but powerful group of men and women of God to move to North Carolina.
Bishop A. Jackson
was appointed Pastor in September 1970 by the late Bishop J.R. Lockley. He did not arrive to take charge until November 1970. At the time of Bishop A. Jackson’s
appointment there were only 6 adult members and no money in the treasury.
Upon his arrival to the city, he stated that he wanted to build a church. The members looked at him with doubt in their hearts, but followed his leadership despite of their feelings and in October of 1972, they moved into their new building at 1021 Biddle Street.
Between 1971 and 1986, many souls were saved and the Church grew Spiritually and Financially. By the end of 1986, there were differences
within the Church. Again God
led Bishop Jackson
along with 5 other Elders. Elder G. Wright, Elder B.J. Moore (now Bishops), Elder W. Brimmer, Elder J. Jones, and Elder B. Brown
and their congregations to charter as the “Biblical House of God”
In March of 1990, God
spoke to Bishop Jackson
again and told him to purchase another building. He did not see a way to accomplish the great task, but with the encouragement and commitment of his Ministers, Deacons, and Members, he was able to proceed on as God has instructed him to do. In June of 1990 this new building was officially turned over to the “Biblical House of God Church”.
Sadly, in April of 1996, our Founder, the late great Bishop Alfonso Jackson
passed and had gone on to Glory, but the mantle has been passed on to Elder Paulette Bryant, and with God’s
help we still are standing here today declaring that we are “New Bern’s Most Exciting Church” with a membership of over 300 saints of God and still Growing.
We thank God for his many Blessings!!!
